Alejandro Mayorkas, an Obama administration alumnus and creator of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, is reportedly one of several people being considered to join the Biden-Harris transition team for the Department of Homeland Security. Trump has been trying to nullify DACA, but Biden pledged to re-establish it in the first 100 days of his presidency. The incoming leader of DHS under Biden would be responsible for reversing the Trump administration’s immigration policies and may direct Congress to pass laws making DACA permanent.
First Judge Appointed to Investigate Immigration Detention Allegations
The Department of Homeland Security named Luke Bellocchi, an immigration attorney with Republican ties, the first ombudsperson for immigration detention in Tuesday. He’ll handle complaints of mistreatment, abuse and other problems inside immigration jails and detention centers. Democratic members of the House Judiciary committee and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus created the position to address concerns with the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Bellocchi worked in a deputy ombudsperson role within U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services during former President George W. Bush’s administration, and at Customs and Border Protection as assistant commissioner.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett Will Soon Be Tested on Immigration Law
Recently confirmed Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett will be tested immediately on elections, the Trump administration’s immigration policies, abortion, the Affordable Care Act and discrimination. On Nov. 30, the justices will notably take up Trump v. New York, which will determine whether Trump had the authority to exclude a count of undocumented immigrants from the census.
