Washington, DC — Mass deportation is the signature promise of the Trump/Vance campaign. Look no further than the gleefully waved placards that read “Mass Deportation Now!” at the RNC convention. When directly asked about the details of their key agenda, Donald Trump and J.D. Vance have repeatedly dodged, running from the question. Yesterday, Vice President Harris laid out the devastating details of the Republican ticket’s mass deportation plan. Speaking at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual leadership conference, Harris described in stark terms the reality of mass deportations. As The New York Times summarizes, “The crowd turned from jovial to silent as the vice president asked them to dig deeper into Mr. Trump’s proposals, which include plans to round up undocumented people on a mass scale and to detain them in camps pending their deportation.”
The immense consequences of the mass deportation agenda for American families, regardless of immigration status, is not yet widely understood. Simplistic polling questions and topline stats fail to capture the enormity of their plan and thus fail to capture the public’s true opinion. As the latest from Popular Information succinctly put it, “The policy is not something that can be summarized in a seven-word poll question. Mass deportations of immigrants would divert law enforcement from critical tasks, cost billions of dollars, break up families, damage the economy, and compromise the nation’s values. Polling like that from Marquette Law School underscores this point with a test that saw a 16-point drop in support for mass deportation with the basic details of the plan outlined in the question. America’s Voice internal polling also found similar results.
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
“The more people learn about the Republicans’ mass deportations agenda the more likely they are to reject the devastating and harmful plan. This is a plan that would employ the military as a show-me-your-papers force conducting neighborhood raids, ripping apart American families, rounding up Dreamers into mass detention camps, and wrecking the economy for all working people.
Instead of allowing Trump and Vance to tout their Stephen Miller-backed plan without context, Democrats and the media must properly explain the true scope of their extreme and harmful agenda.”
